Follow Shari’ah: Abbas to Hurriyat

Saturday, June 11, 2011

Terming stone pelting and Friday strikes as un-Islamic acts, Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen patron Moulana Abbas Ansari today said his group would rejoin Hurriyat Conference (M) provided the conglomerate agrees to carry ahead the movement in accordance with the Shari'ah (Islamic principles).
“I will neither leave Hurriyat nor have left it. It is my creation and nobody has rendered sacrifices like me for the Kashmir cause. The conglomerate should accord preference to religion over politics. Many un-Islamic acts like stone-pelting and strike after Friday prayers are prevalent in Kashmir. Our religion says that we should start the business after prayers, while here the opposite is being practised,” Abbas told reporters on the sidelines of a public rally organized by IuM here.

Abbas said he would write to Hurriyat (M) over these issues and “if they don’t abjure such un-Islamic acts, then I will be forced to quit the conglomerate”.
“If Mirwaiz Umar Farooq wouldn’t accept my pre-conditions, then I will leave the conglomerate. I have been running the movement alone from 1947 and I even rejected Sheikh Muhammed Abdullah’s offer of joining Plebiscite Front in 60’s,”he said.
Abbas said restoration of IuM membership in Hurriyat (M) executive has vindicated his stand. “We will not join the amalgam until they respond to our basic questions and make the report of two member committee public,” he said.
Pertinently, Hurriyat (M) suspended IuM from the conglomerate’s executive body following Abbas Ansari’s meeting with Centre’s interlocutors on Kashmir. The meeting took place on April 20 at the residence of Abbas.
The amalgam had also served show-cause notice to IuM leader asking why the group violated “the decision of not meeting the interlocutors.” The Hurriyat (M) had also constituted a two-member panel to look into the issue.
The IuM however in reply to the show-cause notice stated that their suspension was “in contravention to the constitution of the Hurriyat (M)”.
Following the recommendations of two member committee constituted by the amalgam, suspension of IuM was revoked and its membership restored in Hurriyat (M). However IuM said it would wait and watch over the decision of rejoining the conglomerate.
Abbas today further said the Kashmir issue should be resolved in accordance with the sentiments and aspirations of Kashmiris and through tripartite talks between India, Pakistan and Kashmiri leadership.
“We will not accept any solution worked out by India and Pakistan,” he said.
