Sunday, January 23, 2011

The much hyped plan for flag hoisting at Lal Chowk in Srinagar is apparently heading towards a fixing between Bhartiya Janta Party and the state government as the ongoing Ekta Yatra is unlikely to enter the state. The government and BJP top brass have reached out a secret agreement according to which instead of entering Lakhanpur on Monday, the yatra will halt at Pathankot while a selected group of leaders would be flown to Srinagar for symbolic flag hoisting at Lal Chowk, disclosed highly placed sources. However, sources added, discussions between both the parties are still on and there may be slight changes in the final agreement. As per schedule, the Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha’s Ekta Yatra, which took off from Kolkata on January 12, is slated to enter Lakhanpur on January 24 and reach Srinagar on January 26 for hoisting of national flag at Lal Chowk. However, the state government on last Thursday officially declared to foil the flag hoisting plan stating that any exercise that vitiates atmosphere in Jammu Kashmir, would not be allowed. For the purpose, sources informed, the J&K police has virtually sealed the border with neighbouring Punjab at Lakhanpur and also intensified vigil at the Jammu Railway Station. Besides, around 1,000 state police personnel have been asked to keep a vigil along the Jammu- Pathankote highway, the route to be taken by the Rashtriya Ekta Yatra for the flag hoisting programme. Seven additional
check-points have been set up and all other check-points put on high alert for round-the-clock vigil of the highway.Sources informed that about 400 alleged BJP activists from Gujarat, who arrived here today at Jammu Railway
station via trains for the scheduled programme, were briefly detained by the police. However, sources added, later they were allowed to proceed towards Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage after an assurance by the BJP that these activists would remain at Katra till January 26.Despite an agreement, Police contingents have been dispatched to Lakhanpur and are being deployed on a bridge linking Madhopur in Punjab with Lakahanpur, sources disclosed adding that cops have been ordered not to allow any vehicle or marcher of the On the other hand, sources disclosed, BJP has also planned to send about 50 senior workers to Srinagar in advance for hoisting national flag at Lal Chowk in case the state government retracts from its assurance. Three groups of BJP activists from Delhi, Gujarat and Jammu will flow to Srinagar ahead of January 26 and attempt flag hoisting at Lal Chowk, sources informed. However, sources added, both government and BJP have developed a tactic understanding for avoiding trouble over the issue even as discussions are still on for a final agreement.
