China may grab territory in Ladakh, Arunachal: Report

New Delhi, Feb 29: China may resort to territorial grabs, including through a ‘major military offensive’, especially in Arunachal Pradesh or Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, and India should respond with ‘a strategy of quid pro quo’, says a report by an independent group of Indian analysts.
“Our frontiers with China have been mostly stable for some years now. However, China could assert its territorial claims (especially in the Arunachal sector or Ladakh) by the use of force,” says the report that seeks to outline a foreign and strategic policy for India in the 21st century.

Bikram Singh will be new Indian Army chief

New Delhi: The government Saturday named Eastern Army commander Lt. Gen. Bikram Singh as the next Indian Army chief. 

The announcement comes after months of the row over the date of birth of incumbent Gen. V.K. Singh.

Pak cabbie in US admits to aiding Qaida in Kashmir

CHICAGO: A Pakistani-American cabbie has pleaded guilty to charges of funnelling money to al-Qaida commander Ilyas Kashmiri, who is now believed to have been killed, for terror activities in Jammu & Kashmir and faces up to 15 years in jail. 

The 58-year-old Raja Lahrasib Khan, who was born and raised in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir before he migrated to US in 1970s, pleaded guilty to one count relating to material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

China has been told about Pak's illegal occupation of Kashmir: Krishna

The leadership in China has been repeatedly updated about akistan's illegal occupation of parts of Kashmir, said External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Wednesday.

 

Interacting with media here on the sidelines of his three-day visit to China, Krishna said: "Well, this has been generally raised with the Chinese leadership and we feel that Pakistan is in illegal occupation of certain territories in Jammu and Kashmir and this has been brought to the notice of the Chinese side repeatedly and there it stands."

Pakistan, India can't afford war over Kashmir: Gilani

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and India have fought four wars on the Kashmir issue but can't afford any more in "this 21st century", Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said while calling for resolving issues through dialogue, diplomacy, prudent policy and national consensus. 


Gilani said with four wars already fought on Kashmir issue, the region still was a flashpoint. "But in this 21st century, we cannot afford wars", Associated Press of Pakistan quoted him as saying on Sunday. 


Pakistan and India have had armed conflicts in 1947-48, 1965, 1971 and 1999.

Pak flag hoisted in K'taka town on new year

Tension prevailed in Sindgi town near Bijapur after it came to the notice of locals that a Pakistani flag had been hoisted on the premises of the Tahsildar's office today, police said.

Soon after receiving the message, police went to the town, about 60 km from Bijapur, and seized it from the flag-pole, SP Rajappa said.

Militant threat to affect municipal polls adversely

Wikileaks: Former NSA Narayanan's exit 'positive for Kashmir'

New Delhi: A US diplomatic cable released by whistle blowing website Wikileaks on Friday claimed that former Indian National Security Advisor (NSA) M K Narayanan's departure from the post is 'positive for Kashmir' as his policy towards Kashmir was 'cautious, conservative, and obstructionist'.

The confidential cable sent by US envoy to India Timothy Roemer on January 16, 2010 says Narayanan's exit will have important implications for India policy on Kashmir.

India anti-corruption chief PJ Thomas forced to resign

The head of India's anti-corruption watchdog has been forced to resign by the Supreme Court on the grounds that he himself faces corruption charges.

PJ Thomas was appointed by the government last year.

But the court overturned the appointment because of charges against him dating from 1992, when he was a civil servant. Mr Thomas denies them.

His resignation is the latest in a series of corruption scandals to hit India's ruling Congress party.

Correspondents say the decision to quash his appointment is likely to embarrass Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who publicly backed Mr Thomas.
