Wanted to tell Imams to raise social issues in sermons: Hurriyat (G) chairman
Police Thursday thwarted the scheduled meeting between Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani and Imams of the Valley by placing a tight siege around Hyderpora residence of the senior separatist leader and ‘restricting’ the civilian movement in the area.
Authorities deployed police and paramilitary personnel in strength around Hyderpora, restricting the civilian movement in the area. The policemen deployed outside Geelani’s residence also tightened the siege around his house and did not allow anybody to venture inside or move out. All along the Hyderpora stretch of the airport road, cops had placed barricades to check the movement of people and vehicles.
“We were placed under total police siege since morning. I had invited 300 Imams. We were supposed to have a session with Imams of the Valley but the government prevented them from reaching Hyderpora by restricting the civilian movement in the area”, Geelani told Rising Kashmir over phone.
He said purpose of his meeting with Ulemas was to impress upon them to raise their voice against the widespread repression and advise people to abstain from social evils, which are now prevalent in the society.
“Since the role of Imams in our society is very constructive and people have belief in them, so I wanted to attract attention of people towards certain social issues through them. I was not going to tell them (Ulemas) to urge people to take up guns”, Geelani said.
Alleging that government is nervous, Hurriyat (G) chairman said, “By thwarting our meet with Uelmas aimed at raising awareness about social issues concerning our society , the Government depicted its frustration by ordering police siege”.
