Baramulla, Dec 14: The Court of Inquiry (CoI) appointed by the government to probe the killings from June 17 to July 13 this year has disappointed the victim families in Baramulla by asking them to travel to Srinagar to record their statements.
CoI Chairman Justice (Retd) Bashir-ud-din said the commission recorded the statements of witnesses from government side today. “We finished the recording of statements of seven killings in North Kashmir here. The recording of statements on victims’ side will take place in Srinagar on December 22,” he said.
The Commission recorded the statements of SSP Baramulla Mansoor Ahmad Untoo, SHO Baramulla Prallath Sharma, Sub District Magistrate Sopore Mohammad Ahsan Khan, Tehsildar Sopore and Magisterial Officer, Sopore.
“The Commission recorded the statements of government officials in Baramulla and Sopore as per their convenience and asked us to travel to Srinagar for recording statements. We are poor people and can’t bear the expenses to travel to Srinagar,” said Rafiq Ahmad, father of a slain youth Faizan.
“I am a daily wager and how can I afford to travel to Srinagar,” he said.
He said the CoI didn’t record the statement of witnesses brought by him today. “We were told to bring the witnesses today for recording their statements,” he said.
Rafiq said he won’t be meeting the CoI again. “It is wastage of time as they are not serious in probing the killings and identifying the culprits. There is no hope for justice,” he said.
Masooda, whose husband Fayaz Ahmad Khanday was killed in police action, said she cannot travel to Srinagar. “My father is bedridden ever since he heard the death of his son in law. I cannot leave him alone at home. Besides, I don’t have money to travel to Srinagar. I would need a lot of money to spend on transportation of witnesses from Baramulla to Srinagar,” she said.
The victims’ families demanded that Commission should provide them an option to record their statements in Baramulla court in case they cannot travel to Srinagar.
“If they recorded the statements of officials here then why should they record our statements in Srinagar. In such a case, they should ensure that our statements are recorded in Baramulla court. I think the Commission is not sincere and wants to close the chapter of inquiry,” said father of one of the victim’s.
The commission is probing the circumstances leading to death of 17 people across the Valley since June 11 to July 19. It is probing three killings in Islamabad, seven in North Kashmir and equal number in Srinagar.
It will fix responsibility into the killings and suggest measures to avert such incidents in future, besides recommending action against the officials responsible for the incidents.
