Defence spokesman Col Biplav Nath told Rising Kashmir that MI-26 helicopter carrying nine passengers took off from air force station at Satwari for Katra area of Reasi at 0900 hours this morning.
“Soon after the take-off, the copter crashed, causing injuries to seven IAF and two railway officials,” he said.“It was due to the instantaneous action of ground staff present at the airport that the lives of the injured persons were saved. The injured were removed to Army hospital for treatment, where their condition is reported to be stable,” he said.
Of the seven injured IAF officers, two were wing commanders, one squadron leader and four junior level officers. “Two others were working as mechanical engineers for IRCON,” defence spokesman said.
He said a technical snag is believed to be cause of the crash. “After the crash, IAF and Airports Authority of India (AAI) closed the airport for air traffic for couple of hours to clear the debris of the chopper,” Nath said.
Meanwhile, an official of the civil aviation department, who wished not to be named, said government has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
After the crash, an Air force AN -32 Kargil Courier carrying 33 passengers from Kargil to Jammu had to land at Srinagar International Airport. “After a delay of two hours at Srinagar Airport the passengers left for Jammu safely in the same IAF aircraft this afternoon. The passengers reached Jammu safely and 44 passengers were later airlifted in the same plane from Jammu to Kargil,” Aamir Ali, Coordinator, Disaster Management Kashmir, said in a statement.
