Party poll

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Srinagar, Dec 14: In a bid to revamp the party, the ruling National Conference is gearing up to go for party-level elections before the Panchayat polls scheduled for January next year.
The NC top brass has decided to introduce young faces to secure an edge over the rivals following the inroads made by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and Congress into its vote-bank in Kashmir.
What remains to be seen is whether the valley’s oldest party can afford to have its chief outside Sheikh dynasty. Most of the NC leaders are in favour of continuation of Farooq Abdullah as the party chief, but votes will decide the fate of the party president as well, party sources said.
Voting will also be held for the posts of party general secretary, provincial president, district presidents and other party posts level posts.
“We have a plan to go for party-level elections before panchayat polls. By then our membership drive will be over,” said NC provincial president, Ali Muhammad Dar.
He said the elections will be held for all posts including the party president.
Sources said NC president had been strongly favoring inclusion of new faces in the party fold.
“A tentative list of district presidents and block presidents has already been prepared,” they said.
“There is a strong voice within the party that people having strong footing in their respective areas should be elected. Besides, party top brass is also keenly watching the performance of incumbent district and block presidents.”
Last party-level elections were held in 2005. The party is supposed to be dissolved after every three years. What has created a sense of desperation within the party circles is that many senior candidates are silently lobbying for the post of general secretary and provincial president.
“Following the ill health of present general secretary Sheikh Nazir, the party may elect somebody else for the post,” sources said. Nazir has been managing most of the party affairs despite his illness over the past many years.
Meanwhile, NC has crossed 15 lakh mark in its ongoing membership drive in the State. It has 22 district presidents and some 82 block presidents.
“The party level elections will be held in two phases, first for parent party and second for its youth wing,” sources said.
A senior NC leader, wishing anonymity, said holding elections before panchayat polls is a good decision. “The party has to be in a good position before any major election,” he said.
Sources said NC’s decision to go for party elections ahead of panchayat polls was a well-planned move to rope in more credible people into the party fold.
“Holding panchyat polls on non-party basis doesn’t require any party affiliation, but patronage is must. NC top-brass has been vehemently stressing on strengthening the party at grass-root level,” they said.
