Terming chief minister Omar Abdullah’s reaction to WikiLeaks expose on torture in Kashmir as “brazen lie”, Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani Saturday alleged that torture is still a routine in the detention and interrogation centers across the Valley.
In a statement issued here, Geelani alleged that Omar’s denial of torture in detention centres during his tenure is nothing but a lie. “Since Omar took charge, 60 per cent people arrested have been severely tortured. We have documentary proof in this regard,” he said.
“During his tenure not only thousands of torture cases came to fore but many persons lost their lives as well. Sameer Ahmad Rah of Batamaloo, Rafiq Ahmad Bangroo of Safa Kadal, Umar Qayoom of Soura, Tariq Ahmad Dar of Rafiabad and Inayat Khan of Dalgate are among the youth, who were arrested and later beaten to death by troopers in 2010. It has been proved by the medical reports as well,” Geelani said.
He said by overlooking Machil fake encounter and Shopian double rape and murder case, Omar has shown his “brazen faced” character. “Who is to be held responsible for the above mentioned cases which took place during his tenure? How can he deny that detainees are not being tortured,” he questioned.
Hurriyat (G) chairman alleged that among those arrested during last five month agitation, there will hardly be any person who had not faced “third degree” torture in police station and the Air Cargo camp. “The Hurriyat leaders were also kept in the many torture centers and subjected to physical and mental tortures during the nights as well. If needed, we can provide evidence and proof that Omar Abdullah cannot deny,” he said
“The torture is not two years old but it has been going on since past 21 years in the Valley. During these years, many episodes about inhuman torture committed by Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) created by Farooq Abdullah have come to fore,” he alleged.
Geelani urged international human rights organisations to inquire into the torture cases that took place in the Valley during past 21 years of conflict.
Reacting to WikiLeaks expose on torture in Kashmir, Omar Abdullah had said yesterday that his government doesn't condone torture and the expose pertains to 2005, when ‘healing touch’ regime was ruling the State.
