Sunday, December 19, 2010

At least 45 houses and mosque were gutted in a devastating fire incident near Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, official sources said.
They said fire broke out late on Friday night in one of the houses in village Khutran, Tulail in Gurez and spread quickly to engulf the adjoining houses and structures.
“At least 45 houses and a mosque and some other structures were completely gutted in the devastating fire in the village. The fire tenders from nearby Dawar were rushed to the spot but these could not be of much help as most of the houses, which were made of wood and mud, were gutted by then," the officials said.
They said there were  no reports of any casualty in the fire incident.
The Natural Disaster Management (NDM) cell of the state government had last year imparted training to residents of Gurez on how to prevent fire from spreading in case of a mishap.
"The incident shows that the tips given to the residents were not followed. We will have to carry out another round of training in the area, which is prone to such fires," Aamir Ali, coordinator NDM cell, said.
Village Khutran has a population of approximate three hundred people living mostly as joint families. The village covers an area of five hundred square meters having approximately 25 houses made of wood and thatch which are highly inflamable.
Giving details of the fire, a defence spokesman said fire broke out in the vicinity of the local mosque in the village on Friday evening. “The wind and dry firewood aggravated the ferocity of fire turning it into an inferno. The fire gradually engulfed a large part of the village,” he said.
He said an army Column immediately rushed to the spot with firefighting equipment and medical team and salvage equipment. “The parties cordoned off the village and initiated action to douse the fire and saved lives and property,” he said
Meanwhile, the fire tenders and additional firefighting equipment of fire department and the Army from Dawar were also rushed to spot. “Additional teams were also inducted to assist in evacuation of civilians from the houses in close proximity of fire. The fire fighting parties also helped the fire brigade personnel to activate their fire engines. The timely action by the troops helped in controlling the ferocity of fire and saving 10 houses in the village and prevented loss of life and property,” the spokesman said.
He said army has provided tents, tarpaulins, bedding and blankets to the fire victims. “The villagers will also be provided meals and medical treatment. A monetary assistance of Rs 25,000/- was distributed by the Army as immediate relief,” he said.
Forest fires and accidental blazes have been regularly occurring in recent days due to the ongoing long dry spell in the Valley.
An official spokesman said on the instructions of Chief Minister, Advisor to Chief Minister Mubarak Gul, MLA Gurez Nazir Ahmed Gurezi and Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Asgar Samoon visited Khupran Tulail to take stock of the situation.
The team announced Rs.10,000 from the  Chief Minister’s relief fund in addition to the Rs 35000 announced by the Divisional Commissioner on the spot to the victims of the fire incident from his natural calamity fund. The team also distributed 150 blankets of the Red cross society, besides the team also announced Rs.45 lakh for link road up to Khupran village under NABARD.
