Doctors threaten strike

Police allegedly thrashed a senior doctor at Sub-district Hospital Sogam, Kupwara and ‘forcibly’ made him sign a ‘drunken certificate’ for a policeman, who according to the doctors was in a normal state on Wednesday night.
Talking to Rising Kashmir, President Doctors Association, Kashmir, Nisar-ul Hassan said that Assistant Surgeon Dr Sameer who was on emergency duty in Sub District Hospital Sogam was ruthlessly beaten after he refused to sign the fake certificate.

“During the intervening night of Thursday, a police party had gone to SDH Sogam and asked Dr Sameer to issue a drunken certificate for a policeman,” he said.

Hassan informed that after thorough examination of the cop, the doctor found no traces of alcohol in his body. “Dr Sameer refused to issue the certificate as according to him the policeman was not drunk. The police party left the hospital but after some time another police party of Special Operation Group of police came to the hospital and dragged Dr Sameer and beat him up ruthlessly,” Hassan alleged.

“After ruthlessly beating the said doctor, the police party, made him to sign the certificate,”  Hassan said.

Strongly condemning the act, Hassan said that fear has struck Dr Sameer who is now asking for a transfer from the area. “He is repeatedly asking me to make efforts for his transfer from the area,” he said.

Demanding immediate action against the alleged cops, Hassan said that the doctors will go on a valley-wide strike if the authorities failed to provide them justice within 24 hours. “We brought up this issue with the district administration, but till now nothing has happened. Now we are waiting for 24 hours after which the doctors will go on indefinite strike, the onus of which will completely lie on government,” Hassan said.

When contacted, Deputy Inspector General of Police (North Kashmir), Muneer Ahmad Khan said that the matter has come to their notice and is being investigated. “We have received the information about the act. It is being investigated,” he said.

Khan assured of proper action against the policemen if found guilty. “As of now, we are investigating the matter and if anyone is found guilty, strong action will be taken against him,” Khan said
