Darkness continues in hinterland

Wednesday, January 11, 2012

The far-flung areas in the Valley continue to reel under darkness as the Power Development Department (PDD) failed to restore electricity there five days after the snowfall.
Meanwhile, the Valley was connected with the Northern Grid today after restoration of all the four transmission lines.
Official sources told Greater Kashmir that restoration of several 11 KV lines is yet to be taken up for supplying electricity in south Kashmir.
“Out of 57 (11 KV) lines in Islamabad (Anantnag), 26 have been restored and 27 were partially repaired and four are yet to be restored. Similarly in Bijbehara out of 35 lines 23 stand restored while 12 have been partially repaired,” an official of PDD said.
He said in Kulgam district out of 29 lines, 23 have been restored while remaining six have been partially repaired.
Sources in the PDD also disclosed that 225 transformers stand damaged across the Valley presently, putting hundreds of localities in darkness.
“Out of them 50 were damaged in snowfall while 500-600 electric poles have also suffered damage. The damaged infrastructure has not been replaced till date in the affected areas,” he said.
In north Kashmir’s upper reaches of Rafiabad, Handwara, Lolab, Kupwara and Bandipora, several villages continued to remain under darkness for the fifth consecutive day today.
Chief Engineer PDD Muhammad Muzaffar Mattoo admitted that electricity is yet to be restored in number of villages.
“We are working round the clock and no stone is being left unturned to restore electricity,” he said added that 900 MW are being supplied in the Valley. “We are just short of 50 MW,” he added.
Chief Engineer System & Operations Wing, Kashmir Ayaz Gul said 220 KV Double Circuit Transmission Line i.e, Kishenpur – Pampore line was restored today.
“The staff had to work in hostile and difficult conditions and restored the line in record time. Now the Valley is connected to Northern Grid through two No. 400 kV & two No. 220 kV Transmission Lines,” the Chief Engineer said.
Following the snowfall on Friday, 220 KV-Kishenpur-Pampore and 400 KV Kishenpur-Wagoora transmission lines were snapped on other side of Jawahar Tunnel.
Meanwhile, water supply remained affected for the fifth consecutive day in hinterland of Valley particularly in south and north Kashmir.
“We are without water supply and have to fetch water from streams for domestic consumption,” said Khursheed Ahmed of Kulgam .
However, Chief Engineer Public Health Engineering Ghulam Rasool Zargar contested the claims. “We have restored 100 percent water supply across the Valley,” he said.
