Rushdie’s India visit has no bearing on Muslim concerns: Omar

Thursday, January 12, 2012

Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah Wednesday said the visit of controversial British author Salman Rushdie to
India is a non-issue and has no bearing on the day-to-day concerns of Muslims.
“He (Rushdie) is not coming to India for the first time. As far as I know, he has come here before also. There are those who want to exploit his visit for political purposes as there are elections in the five states of the country next month,” the chief minister told reporters on the sidelines of a function here at Parade Ground.
“I think we cannot underestimate the intelligence of Indian Muslims. Such issues have no bearing on the day-to-day concerns of Muslims. I don’t believe that there are many Muslims in India for whom the visit of British author is an issue. They are more concerned about daily and future concerns.”
Referring to the statement of Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti in which she called Omar-led government as a ‘headless chicken’, the chief minister said, “He is not irritated nor pricked by her statement.”
Omar said whenever they use such words against him he feels satisfied that he has done good work.
Replying to a query, the chief minister said the government so far has not received any report concerning possibility of any militant attack or law and order problem in the state on Republic Day eve.
