Corruption at its peak in JK: Kamal

Thursday, January 12, 2012

‘Cabinet expansion, reshuffle inevitable’
Stating that that cabinet expansion and reshuffle had become inevitable in the state, senior National Conference leader Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal Wednesday said corruption is at its peak in the State.

“Corruption is at its peak in the State. It is everywhere in India and Pakistan but it could be controlled in J&K if there is a reshuffle. When a minister or a bureaucrat remains at one position for longer period of time, there are more chances of him/her indulging in corrupt practices. So reshuffle is a must,” Kamal told a local news gathering agency, KNS.
On cabinet expansion, he said his personal opinion is that it should happen without any delay. “Work suffers when a single minister has to take care of several portfolios. NC and Congress should go for expansion Chief Minister Omar Abdullah should take the issue seriously as both parties are in favour of it. Omar should consult his party and colleagues before going for such an exercise,” he said.
On cabinet reshuffle, Kamal, said, “I endorse party president Farooq Abdullah’s stand. He recently told NC core group meeting that some senior ministers should be ready to take responsibility of party positions. Farooq is an experienced person and he knows what to do.”
Asked whether there were chances of him being included in the cabinet, he said, “It is decision of the party high command. I was recently ousted from party positions and the decision was taken in the haste. I didn’t get an opportunity since then to meet Farooq or Omar to discuss the issue.”
“I was ousted due to the pressure from Congress,” he alleged.
Stating that raking up rotational Chief Minister issue was needless, senior NC leader said. “Rotational CM issue was useless. When India can have one Prime Minister in 22 party coalition, what was the need to have rotational CM in two party coalition in J&K. Change of guard always hampers developmental projects. Now as Omar will continue, the progress of developmental works will be better,” he said.
Without naming any Congress leader, he said, “Some people tried to influence Congress high command in New Delhi for rotational CM. But they didn’t listen to them.”
He advised party to prepare for 2014 elections from now. “We should prepare for 2014 elections from now so that we come in full majority. NC is a powerful party and we are single largest party in the state,” he added.
