Sacrifices For Kashmir
Resolution Not For
Development: Beigh; Reflect
Ground Reality: PDP

The repeated assertions of the centre’s interlocutors about the “governance deficit” in the state evoked mixed response, with ruling National Conference saying the basic issue was the resolution of Kashmir issue, while PDP maintained that they had reflected the ground reality.
The interlocutors on Thursday called for transparency and accountability in the governance in the state saying there was “urgent effort needed to reduce trust deficit between rulers and the ruled.” The panel also said that continuing crackdown on the youth by police was disturbing.
Senior leader of National Conference and
Member Parliament Mehboob Beigh said the governance or performance of anybody couldn’t be tested until the basic issue was redressed. “We can get breathing periods in between, but cannot have political or economic stability unless the basic issue is resolved,” he said. Beigh said the UPA government at the Centre should take the opposition BJP on board, for resolving the issue.
“Rather than looking whether roads have been constructed or not, they should build up national consensus on addressing the real issue as Kashmiris have not laid sacrifices for governance or basic amenities and I think those who talk about the development are diverting the attention from the real issue,” he said. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti said that interlocutors have just reflected the ground reality of the “governance deficit vividly visible in the state.” “There are certain obvious things on the ground, which doesn’t need investigation. You can project the rosy picture through electronic and print media, but ground realities cannot be ignored as they are evident,” she said. “Everything is in shambles whether it is the basic amenities like electricity, drinking water or employment. Even the reconciliation process and the atmosphere of hope and expectation generated by the previous regime has been frittered away by this government,” she said. Senior Congress leader Abdul Gani Vakil said it seems that interlocutors were unaware about the worsening situation in Kashmir few months back.
“The credit goes to the state government and Congress leadership for normalizing the situation and if they talk about governance deficit, I think they are not aware about the worsening situation which the Coalition government overcame in quick time,” he said.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader MY Tarigami said the interlocutors should focus on the political part, but improvement in the administration was also must.
“The governance deficit word has been in the air for quite some time and there was need for alleviating sufferings of the common man.” he said.
