Prepaid users in JK can call 1900 for UPC

Thursday, January 27, 2011

For the convenience of the prepaid mobile subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir who have been barred from sending SMSes due to official ban, the telecom companies in the state have been asked to register customers’ request for Unique Porting Code through voice calls to 1900.
Even as the ban on the SMS was lifted on postpaid network in J&K recently, the short message service still remains under ban on prepaid network.
As per the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) guidelines, any subscriber who wishes to change his/her service provider can send an SMS to 1900. On sending the SMS a Unique Porting Code (UPC) is generated for the subscriber, which is subsequently passed on to the new operator for necessary action. In the rest of India, a UPC can be generated just by sending a SMS on 1900 to avail the MNP service.
But since the prepaid subscribers in J&K could not send the message because of ban, central government has devised a new method for them so as they don’t face any problem.
According to an official notification, the service providers in J&K have been asked to make necessary arrangements for receiving calls on 1900 from the prepaid subscribers interested in getting a unique porting code for shifting from one network to another.
The operator at 1900, according to the notification, shall provide the subscriber UPC after verifying his/her number with Caller Line Identification.
The operator shall maintain a record of all the UPCs issued, along with the mobile number and date of issue of UPC.
