A day after Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti lashed out at Omar led coalition for failing to ensure a conducive atmosphere in maintaining peace in the state, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today came out with a fervent appeal to the opposition members including that of the mainstream PDP to extend cooperation in ensuring a peaceful summer season ahead.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on the floor of the House that the days to come are crucial to make sure that the wheels of progress and prosperity in the state move on without any further disturbances and such efforts should be over and above party politics.
While replying to the debate on Demands for Grants for the departments under his charge, the Chief Minister said that such initiatives are imperative to bring back the State to the track of development.
“You can dislike me but don’t let the State to go through the turmoil it has to face last year and before that in 2008 and 2009….. Let there be one good season and I assure that the normalcy would be restored…. All necessary steps to maintain peace and order would be initiated,” Omar Abdullah said
Asking PDP, albeit not naming it, the Chief Minister said do not create hype over the situation in the coming summers in Kashmir.

“Please don’t create an impression that the summer ahead in Valley would be violent…. We hope that after the ‘Darbar’ moves to Valley, the situation would be peaceful there.” Omar said
However, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti while reacting to Omar’s statement said, “These are mere allegations and nothing else.”
Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah continued with his speech by saying, “If situation in Kashmir again gets disturbed, it will not only affect the ruling party but it has its ramifications on the opposition as well.”
“Instead let us work together to ensure that the tourism gets a fillip, hotels remain packed with tourists and political activities of the mainstream outfits go on with widespread participation of the people irrespective of their party affiliations… Let there be everlasting peace so that the people don’t have to experience any more pain and sorrow,” he added

Reminding the House that all previous Chief Ministers from Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah till Ghulam Nabi Azad wanted to see a vibrant Jammu and Kashmir and he also is trying to achieve that goal.
“Let there be a sincere and united effort to fulfil the dreams of the previous Chief Ministers including Sheikh Saheb, Farooq Saheb, Mufti Saheb and Azad Saheb to make the state ‘Kushhal’ and peaceful,” Chief Minister said
Referring to the Amnesty International Report on alleged human rights violations in the state, the Chief Minister said the report would not be overlooked.
“I assure the House that the Amnesty report would not be ignored and would be considered with all its suggestions,” Omar maintained.
In an apparent bid to correct the figures put by Mehbooba Mehbooba in the assembly yesterday, the Chief Minister clarified that there were 1,153 incidents of violence in 2010 and little over 4,000 people were arrested.
“But presently there are 171 people in custody, of them 128 are in custody under PSA, 24 under judicial custody and 19 in police custody,” he said

In what could be seen as responding to PDP chief’s loud call for bringing the young separatists on board, Abdullah exhorted them to join the dialogue process with Interlocutors.
Describing Interlocutors as bridge of political dialogue process to address Kashmir issue, Chief Minister expressed the hope that those who have not yet participated in the process would come on the board soon to put forth their view points.
“When you are openly advocating Azadi, plebiscite and even to be part of Pakistan, why can’t you convey it to the Interlocutors in the dialogue process”, he questioned the separatists without naming them.
While referring to police employment rallies, the Chief Minister said that such rallies will be held in those areas which are unrepresented adding that for the last 20 years no such rally was held in Srinagar. He said that such rallies would be held irrespective of any consideration, simply for engaging the deserving candidates from the areas left so far under represented.

Omar retaliates on ‘watch and vehicle’ ……!
Pooh-poohing the perception floated by the leader of largest opposition party in the Assembly regarding the commission or whatsoever kind being offered by the power companies, the Chief Minister challenged the PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti to disclose the name of the Member of the House possessing watch worth Rs 50 lakh and a car costing Rs 1.50 crore.
Requesting the Speaker to ask the leader of the opposition to divulge the names of those individuals she hinted at during her speech yesterday, the Chief Minister said that it is necessary to maintain the integrity of the members.
“If PDP leader can not reveal it in the House for lack of courage, then call her to your Chamber in the private and ask for the name,” Omar requested the Chair

It is worthwhile to mention here that Mehbooba in her speech on the floor of the House yesterday alleged that an offer of commission was made to the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed by a power company.
However, she informed the House that Mufti asked them to construct four mini-power projects instead of paying the commission to him.
